Message by H.E. Dr. Kazem Gharib Abadi, Ambassador  and Permanent Representative of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the United Nations Office and  other International Organizations in Vienna

on the Occasion of the 42nd Anniversary of the Islamic Revolution

(10 February 2021- Vienna)

Every year on this day, we come together to celebrate the anniversary of Iran’s Islamic Revolution. This year, due to the COVID19 pandemic, we made Iran’s National Day online.

Forty-two years ago, with the sacrifices made by the Iranian people and under the leadership of a great figure in the history of the country, Imam Khomeini, the Islamic Revolution of Iran was accomplished on February 13, 1979.

Independence, freedom and the Islamic Republic were the three main demands of the Iranian nation, derived from the mottoes of the people during the Islamic Revolution, for which the Iranian government and people have made great sacrifices over the past four decades. Denial of any kind of foreign dominance has been one of the fundamental principles of the Iranian revolution.

Establishing a democratic government system based on Islamic values and elements of Iranian culture was another goal of the people which was achieved by establishing the Islamic Republic through a referendum to determine the ruling system of the country and the Iranian people, including women and men governed their destiny for the first time.

Undoubtedly, further to great achievements in different fields during past four decades, one of the most important manifestations of the Islamic Revolution has been the changes in the field of foreign policy of Iran, which has led to the formation of an independent, active and innovative foreign policy, based on the three principles of dignity, wisdom and expediency and two solid and inviolable pillars of not interfering in the affairs of others and not allowing others to interfere in the internal affairs of the country.

Based on these values, we work tirelessly in different international organizations here in Vienna to promote multilateralism, rule of law and cooperation among states in various areas, from nuclear technology to outer space. We also try to denounce and oppose any kind of unilateral compulsion, including inter alia, the unilateral coercive measures which are against International law . I call upon all of you, to join us in this endeavor.

I would like to conclude by the hope that this time next year, we can gather again to celebrate this day of Victory.
