Director General of the Secretariat of the High Council for Iranian Expatriates at the Iranian Foreign Ministry Alireza Hashemi Rajaei has strongly condemned as unlawful and arbitrary the US governments mass detention of Iranian nationals residing in the US and the inhumane treatment they face.
Director General of the Secretariat of the High Council for Iranian Expatriates at the Iranian Foreign Ministry Alireza Hashemi Rajaei has strongly condemned as unlawful and arbitrary the US government's mass detention of Iranian nationals residing in the US and the inhumane treatment they face. Hashemi Rajaei said the US move, which has followed Washington's support and involvement in the Zionist regime’s military aggression against Iran’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, is a clear violation of international legal norms and principles. He voiced serious concern over the issue, saying that reports show that the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS), as the policymaker, and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), as the executive body, have carried out harsh policies and extensive security and enforcement operations targeting a large number of Iranian residents in the US. These actions not only contravene human rights principles but have also caused deep concern among the families of the detained Iranians. Referring to the 1963 Vienna Convention on Consular Relations, Hashemi Rajaei reminded the US government of its obligation to promptly allow consular access to the detained Iranian nationals. He further stressed that despite repeated follow-ups by the Interests Section of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Washington, no satisfactory explanation has been provided regarding the reasons for the arrests. “We strongly condemn the insulting and inhumane behavior toward Iranian citizens in the US and demand immediate consular access to provide the necessary services”, he said. Hashemi Rajaei stressed that mistreatment of foreign nationals based on their nationality or religion constitutes a clear case of systemic racism within US policy institutions and violates international human rights standards, especially the principle of non-discrimination. The Iranian Foreign Ministry official added that such acts will inevitably entail international responsibility for Washington. Hashemi Rajaei also reaffirmed the Islamic Republic of Iran’s unwavering support for the rights of its nationals, saying, “We will spare no effort in defending the rights of Iranian citizens in the face of the consequences of the US government’s racist decision”. He noted that the Interests Section of Iran in Washington and the Foreign Ministry of Iran stand ready to assist detained Iranians and facilitate their return to homeland.
