Iranian FM: European troika lacks moral and legal authority to trigger snapback
The foreign ministers of the European troika and the EU’s foreign policy chief have held a telephone conversation with top Iranian diplomat Seyed Abbas Araghchi.
The foreign ministers of the European troika and the EU’s foreign policy chief have held a telephone conversation with top Iranian diplomat Seyed Abbas Araghchi.   During the conversation, the Islamic Republic of Iran’s position regarding the so-called “snapback” mechanism as well as the responsibility of the three European countries and the European Union in this regard were outlined. Araghchi underlined that the European troika lack any legal and moral authority to trigger the snapback mechanism and warned against the consequences of such an action.   Araghchi stressed that, just as the Islamic Republic of Iran acts firmly in defending itself, it has never abandoned the path of diplomacy and remains prepared for any diplomatic solution that would safeguard the rights and interests of the Iranian people.   He further responded to the repeated proposal by the European parties to extend UN Security Council Resolution 2231 in order to provide more time for diplomacy, noting this is essentially a decision for the UN Security Council to make.   He also said while Tehran reaffirms its principled stance on this matter, it does not intervene in this process. Araghchi added that Iran will nevertheless consult and exchange views with its friends in the Security Council regarding the implications of such a move and the way forward.   The three European countries and the EU’s foreign policy chief for their part reiterated their readiness to work toward a diplomatic solution.   All sides agreed that the talks between Iran and the European troika as well as the EU will continue next Tuesday at the level of deputy foreign ministers.
