Iran’s Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi, who has traveled to New York to attend the United Nations General Assembly, met on Saturday morning with the President of the 80th annual session of the UN General Assembly, Annalena Baerbock.
During the meeting, the Iranian foreign minister highlighted the unique status of the UN General Assembly as the only global forum with universal membership, and emphasized the responsibility of the key UN body to uphold the principles and objectives of the Charter, the rule of law, and justice.
Expressing deep regret over the obstruction and influence exerted by certain powers on the UN’s performance, particularly regarding the genocide in Gaza and the Zionist regime’s warmongering against countries in West Asia, he described the military aggression by the Zionist regime and the US against Iran as a dangerous development in the UN’s 80-year history.
He reminded the UN and all its organs of their duty to respond decisively to such violations of international law.
The Iranian foreign minister also condemned the move by three European countries that, following the US lead, reinstated previously annulled UN Security Council resolutions against Iran. He called the action illegal and unjustified, warning of its consequences for diplomatic processes related to Iran’s nuclear issue.
The President of the UN General Assembly, emphasizing the importance of all governments adhering to the principles and objectives of the UN Charter, called for the continuation of diplomatic efforts to prevent further escalation of tensions in the region, including with regard to Iran’s nuclear file.
