Iran’s Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi met and held talks on Monday with the United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres.
Iran’s Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi met and held talks on Monday with the United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres.
During the meeting, the Iranian foreign minister outlined Iran’s positions regarding developments in West Asia, particularly the serious threat posed by the continued warmongering and lawlessness of the Zionist regime to international peace and stability.
He emphasized the special responsibility of the UN and the secretary-general himself in safeguarding the principles and objectives of the UN Charter.
Referring to the military aggression of the Zionist regime and the US against Iran’s territorial integrity and national sovereignty in June, the foreign minister described the illegal attack on Iran’s peaceful nuclear facilities in the midst of diplomatic negotiations as a blatant violation of international law and the UN Charter, and a betrayal of diplomacy.
He stressed the necessity of holding the aggressor parties accountable.
Meanwhile, the foreign minister called the move by three European countries and the US to misuse the dispute resolution mechanism of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) to reinstate terminated UN Security Council resolutions against Iran, unjustified and illegal.
He described it as an unprecedented blow to diplomacy and evidence of the complete lack of goodwill on the part of those countries.
Araghchi emphasized that Resolution 2231 and all restrictions stipulated in it regarding Iran’s nuclear issue must be considered terminated on the scheduled date of October 18.
Araghchi also touched on repeated violations of the UN Headquarters Agreement and the imposition of unjustified and illegal restrictions on Iranian delegations and diplomats in New York by the US government, calling on the secretary-general to take appropriate action in this regard.
For his part, the UN secretary-general, while stressing the importance of all parties adhering to diplomacy in order to resolve international issues, declared the readiness of the UN Secretariat to provide any assistance in this regard.
The secretary-general also emphasized the importance of the host country fulfilling its obligations toward UN member states and refraining from violating the duties set forth in the Hea
dquarters Agreement.
