Iran Statement at the resumed 17th IRG of UNCAC

Statement by the delegation of the Islamic Republic of Iran before First resumed seventeenth session of the Implementation Review Group of Conference of the States Parties to the United Nations Convention against Corruption (Vienna 31 August- 4 September)

Agenda Item 2: Performance of the Mechanism for the Review of Implementation of the United Nations Convention against Corruption

In the name of God, the most compassionate, the most merciful

Mr. Chair,

At the outset, allow me to convey the appreciation of my delegation for the continued efforts of the Secretariat in facilitating the work of the Implementation Review Group. We remain fully committed to the successful functioning of the Review Mechanism and to contributing constructively to its further development.

We express our commitment to the principles governing the functioning of the Review Mechanism of the Implementation of the Convention, namely its intergovernmental and technical nature, transparency, openness to broad participation, impartiality, and non-punitive character.

The review of the Islamic Republic of Iran's implementation of the provisions of the Convention concerning the prevention of corruption and measures for the return of assets has been successfully concluded, with the final report having been finalized on 24 August. My delegation is pleased to note that the review process was conducted in a constructive and professional manner. We wish to express our gratitude to the UNODC experts, as well as to the Governments of Palestine and Armenia, as the reviewing countries, for their dedicated efforts and valuable contributions.

Currently, our competent national authorities are actively developing an implementation mechanism to address the recommendations issued to our country, with a view to further enhancing our anti-corruption framework in line with our national priorities and international commitments. We remain hopeful that the technical assistance needs identified during the course of this review will be duly followed up by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and that the necessary support will be extended to facilitate our efforts in implementing the recommendations effectively.

Mr./ Madam Chair,

My delegation wishes to reaffirm that, notwithstanding the additional challenges arising from the full-spectrum warfare—military, economic, and hybrid—waged against our nation by the US-Israeli side, the Islamic Republic of Iran remains unwavering in its commitment to combating corruption and strengthening good governance, and will continue to utilize all available capacities to fulfil its obligations under the Convention.

In conclusion, my delegation reaffirms its readiness to engage constructively in the deliberations of this session and to work with all delegations towards the successful launch of the second phase of the Review Mechanism. We remain convinced that the Mechanism, guided by its fundamental principles, can continue to serve as an effective tool for assisting States Parties in strengthening their anti-corruption frameworks and fostering international cooperation.

 I thank you.
