UN Secretary-General António Guterres held a telephone conversation this Thursday evening with Iran's Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi, regarding the Iranian nuclear issue as well as regional developments.

The UN Secretary-General welcomed the recent understanding concerning the modalities of interaction between Iran and the IAEA. He emphasized the support of the United Nations for the continuation of dialogue and the diplomatic process with respect to the Iranian nuclear issue.

Araghchi reaffirmed Iran’s determination to safeguard the rights and interests of the Iranian nation in accordance with the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT). He underscored the necessity of an explicit and resolute stance on the part of the United Nations and all States in condemning the unlawful attacks against Iran’s peaceful nuclear facilities. Araghchi characterized the approach of the three European States, in disregarding the military aggressions of the United States and the Zionist regime while threatening to reinstate annulled Security Council resolutions, as irresponsible and unfounded, and stressed that such an approach would merely serve to further complicate the matter.

The Iranian Foreign Minister also highlighted the responsible conduct of Tehran in engaging in constructive dialogue with the IAEA to reach an understanding regarding the fulfillment of Iran’s safeguards obligations under the new circumstances arising from the unlawful attacks against Iran’s nuclear facilities. Araghchi emphasized the necessity for the European parties and the members of the United Nations Security Council to appreciate the value and significance of this development.

He further identified the genocide in the Occupied Palestine and the warmongering of the Zionist regime as the foremost issue confronting the world today. Araghchi condemned the recent terrorist aggression of the regime against Qatar, and underscored the shared responsibility of the international community, the United Nations, and the Secretary-General himself to bring an end to the genocide and to restrain the expansionism and aggressions of Israel.
